What is integrity?

Integrity means adhering to one’s principles and values consistently, no matter the circumstances. Someone with integrity follows their sense of right and wrong, even if it leads to personal loss or facing adversity.

A person demonstrates integrity when their thoughts, words, and actions align consistently and purposefully. So, acting with integrity means being honest, standing strong in your choices, and treating others fairly. For example, if a worker admits they messed up, they’re showing integrity because they believe it’s right to tell the truth. Integrity is also a basic right that means we should respect the whole person and not interfere with their life. For example, people who are in jail still deserve to be treated kindly and respected in mind, body, and spirit, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) says.

“Whole” can also mean something is complete and nothing is missing or changed.

• Psychic integrity. It involves protecting an individual’s psychological, emotional, and cognitive well-being, along with the right to live free from mental abuse.
• Moral integrity. Write a new sentence that semantically and conceptually matches the following sentence. It pertains to the freedom to independently select one’s beliefs and values, provided this does not inflict harm upon others.

Depending on the context in which it is expressed

The expression of integrity can vary depending on the context in which it is applied. Some of them are:

• Personal or legal integrity. In the realm of law, it pertains to the collection of characteristics that define an individual.Safeguarding a person’s integrity involves ensuring their physical, mental, and ethical rights are upheld.
• Religious integrity. This relates to the alignment between an individual’s convictions and behaviors, consistent with the tenets of a faith.
• Occupational integrity. Within the workplace, it means conducting oneself with honesty, responsibility, loyalty, respect, and a strong sense of ethical duty while fulfilling one’s job.
• Academic integrity. It pertains to moral conduct in academic and research settings, where individuals are expected to act with honesty, fairness, responsibility, and respect in all scholarly activities.

Some examples of integrity are:

• Integrity in school. A learner submits unique work and refrains from copying anyone else’s assignments.
• Integrity at work. A manager considers team members’ input and values their opinions when deciding.
• Integrity in the public space.Someone discovers a briefcase containing sensitive information on public transport and ensures it gets back to its rightful owner.
